TMS Coils
Several different coil types are available for cortical stimulation. The Focal point Coil (Cadwell Laboratories, Inc.) is a 3.5-inch diameter round coil with a pointed tip. Round coils are most useful when stimulating the motor cortex that controls movement of the lower extremities, which are located on the inner walls of the two hemispheres of the brain. The Corticoil (Cadwell Laboratories, Inc.) is a figure-8-shaped coil in a rectangular casing, 3.5 x 2-inches. Current flows in the opposite direction through two adjacent coils in each arm of the coil. The effects of the currents are additive, so that stimulating ability is doubled in the center of the coil. Figure-8 coils are more useful than round coils when stimulation of a very small and precise region (about 1 cm x 1 cm) is desired.
